Choose a starting point

Prepare the picture before chasing a smaller file

Start with the balanced-quality preset and inspect the exported video. Decide on framing in your editor and check the destination’s publishing preview separately.

A portrait video ready to publish

Keep the source aspect ratio and start with balanced quality. Inspect faces, gradients and movement in the export before uploading it.

Captions or a recorded tutorial

Keep the original resolution initially and read the text at phone size. If letters break up, compare a higher-quality export instead of repeatedly compressing the result.

A landscape clip for a vertical layout

Crop or add a background in a video editor first. This tool compresses video and preserves its aspect ratio; it does not reposition subjects or turn landscape into portrait.

Before you share

Smaller file, same frame shape

These shapes illustrate what compression preserves. They are not a list of Instagram’s accepted formats or publishing requirements.

Source shape → After compression

Portrait stays portrait · 9:16

A portrait source keeps its shape when compressed. Check that captions and the subject are visible in the publishing preview.

Source shape → After compression

Landscape stays landscape · 16:9

A landscape source remains landscape. A smaller MB value does not crop it into a vertical video.

Framing belongs in the edit

Position text and subjects before compression, then check the actual post preview. Avoid relying on a generic safe-area diagram for every placement.

Compression changes the amount of data. Resolution changes pixel dimensions. Cropping changes the visible composition and must be done in an editor.

When the result needs another try

The published version looks softer

Compare the local export first. If that is already soft, export from the original at higher quality; if only the published copy changes, review the app’s upload settings and preview.

Text or the subject is cut off

Inspect the source, exported MP4 and publishing preview in turn. Adjust framing in your editor when the destination crops the composition; changing the size target will not fix the crop.

The upload is rejected

Read the app’s specific error and verify the destination’s current requirements for duration, format and dimensions. This compressor does not trim duration or guarantee publication.

Common questions

No. Compression keeps the source aspect ratio. Crop or reframe the video in an editor before uploading if needed.
